Dj: RHYTHM DOCTOR
London via Tallinn – Full sonic spectrum from jazz to disco and house to dubstep (London Calling / Mutant Disco)
With a DJ career spanning 3 decades & production credits from 1988, the Rhythm Doctor has an almost unrivalled knowledge of contemporay dance music; an intoxicating fusion when combined with programming & mixing skills of the highest quality.
As a youth from inner city Birmingham his first passion was Reggae music- to this day he enjoys spicing his set with a touch of dub or the latest dance hall rydims. His first break as a DJ came in 1976 when he fused the positive vibrations of Punk Rock with Reggae, Funk & Disco in weekly events at Coventry University. In 1980 he created a club called the ’Rhythm Clinic’ which added a live element, with performances from bands like A Certain Ratio & 23 Skidoo.
In the mid 80’s the Sunday all dayer scene was huge in the UK & RD was regularly spinning Jazz-Funk & pure Jazz & Latin in venues such as the Birmingham Locarno & Nottinghams Rock City, alongside such DJ legends as Colin Curtis, Baz fe Jazz & Paul Murphy. Live artists also featured heavily at these events & RD was priveleged to have supported, Sharron Redd, Mantronix & the first Chicago House Tour.
In 1986 RD decided to move to London & together with long time friend Jerry Dammers created the 3A’s – Artists Against Aparthied club in Covent Garden. Guests such as Soul II Soul, Norman Jay, Tim Westwood, Coldcut & the On-U sound system, made this night legendary in the history of London clubs. At the 3A’s RD introduced London to House music & together with the likes of Kid Batchelor, Eddie Richards, Colin Faver & Jazzy M was one of the few DJ’s championing this new music in the capital. Two live DJ mixes created in the 3A’s by RD were soon to make their way on to vinyl, the House mix of ’Free Nelson Mandela’ by the Special AKA & ’Mister/Phuture’ by Rhythm Doctor.
By 1988 House had exploded & pirate radio stations were at the forefront of promoting the sound. RD joined Fantasy FM, coming out of the East End of London & worked with future heroes such as DJ Hype & Mr.C. This East side connection saw RD spinning at the infamous Dungeons & later Clink St. plus innumarable massive illegal raves. In 1990 RD was looking for a stable venue & at the Gardening Club he founded another legend in Londons clubland history –’Feel Real’, together with Rob Acteson, Femi B, Evil O & MC E-Mix. Almost every major star from the US house music scene performed there & on one night alone the line up was- Tony Humphries, Lil Louie Vega, Arnold Jarvis, Kevin Saunderson & Inner City live!
The mid to late 90’s saw RD spreading his vibe far & wide across the globe. In 1993 he produced a top 10 Billlboard hit-’Enjoy Life’ on 8 Ball records which took him to New York & virtually every major city in Europe, then together with Philippe Lussan RD formed Mama records & released 16 eps & 1 album. An offer of work from Estonia in 1995 was to have a major effect on RDs life. After being blown away by an amazing warehouse party in the capital Tallinn, RD was offered a monthly venue & proceeded in bringing over many of his artist friends to perform, including Robert Owens, A Man Called Adam & Basement Jaxx.
In Tallinn RD met the love of his life, married & established Estonias first monthly independant party -Mutant Disco in 1997. Guests have been many, to name but a few, DJ Pierre, Joe Claussell, Gilles Peterson, Moodyman, The Bug Ame & Dixon & Cassio Ware.
RD likes to spin a wide selection of music from House, Latin, & Disco to Jazz, Reggae & Funk but can play exclusive sets of any of these genres.
